Umrah is a sacred journey for Muslims. While it is not mandatory like Hajj, it still holds great spiritual value. Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world travel to Makkah to perform Umrah. In this blog, we will walk you through the important steps of Umrah in a simple and easy-to-understand way.
Umrah Steps Start with Niyyah (Intention)
To begin with, make the intention (Niyyah) for Umrah. This should be done before you cross the Miqat, which is the set boundary for starting Umrah. Next, wear the Ihram — two white, unstitched sheets for men, and a modest, simple dress for women.
Tip: After wearing the Ihram, say: “Labbaik Allahumma Umrah” to confirm your intention.
Travel to Makkah
After wearing Ihram, travel to Makkah. Keep reciting the Talbiyah:
“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik…”
Say it often with a clean heart. This shows your love for Allah.
Main Umrah Step – Tawaf Around the Kaaba
Once you arrive at Masjid al-Haram, make your way toward the Kaaba. Then, begin the Tawaf, which involves walking around the Kaaba seven times. Start from the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad) and move in a counter-clockwise direction.
During each round, remember to make Dua and keep your heart focused. After completing all seven rounds, if possible, pray two rakat behind Maqam-e-Ibrahim.
Do Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah
After completing Tawaf, the next step is to proceed to the hills of Safa and Marwah. Here, you will perform Sa’i, which means walking between these two points seven times. This act honors the journey of Hajra (AS), the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), as she searched for water for her son.
You may walk at a comfortable pace, but men are encouraged to walk briskly between the green lights.
Final Umrah Steps: Cut or Shave Hair
Finally, the last step of Umrah is to cut or shave the hair. Men should either shave their heads or trim their hair short, while women should cut a small portion of their hair.
Once this is done, your Umrah is complete, and you may now remove the Ihram.
